Marvelous Mission Viejo, California .... is a mostly residential suburban city located in Southern Orange County with numerous parks - about two per square mile, in fact. In Mission Viejo you'll find a large number of single family homes in addition to a few condominiums. There is also a private country club here, a college and a regional mall. In 2006, the estimated population of Mission Viejo was estimated at 97,997. The city was incorporated in 1988 and it comprises 17.4 square miles.
Mission Viejo is a hilly region which was once used as a grazing land for cattle and sheep. Due to the complexity of the area's terrain, it was one of the last regions in Orange County to be urbanized. But in the early 1970s, urban planner Donald Bren took the challenge. He drafted a master plan which accomodated the countour of the area, placing roads in the valley and houses on the hills. Mission Viejo homes achieved an almost instant level of high demand. In the late 1970s and the 1980s, housing tracts often sold out before their construction even began.
Mission Viejo's houses and shopping centers have been mostly designed in the Spanish mission style, with stucco walls and tile roofs.
